How the Dog Fences Works?
The fence has an electric wire fitted with a transmitter and installed underground all around the borders of your acreage or Port Coquitlam BC property. This fence system works by giving out a beeping signal which is received by your dog’s radio collar, each time it (the dog) gets too close to the fence. If your dog continues to ignore the signals, a mild static shock is delivered via its collar to stop it from crossing the fence. However, the shock frequency can be adjusted to limit fear or harm to your dog.
Are Electronic Dog Fences Legal in Port Coquitlam BC?
I was in the middle of the lake fishing last Sunday and I get a frantic call from a lady with an Invisible dog fence brand system. She tells me her system is beeping and she can't get it to stop. She further explains that she can't get anyone on the phone at the dealer except someone that says they can schedule a service call and they'll come and fix it. As she talks further she discloses that she has already unplugged it and it is still beeping and its driving her crazy. She has no use for the system as her dog had passed away over 2 years ago. The lady tells me she has called a couple different Invisible dog fence Dealers she found online and no one was willing to help her get the beep stopped.
As a formally educated businessman I find this attitude of the Invisible dog fence dealers to be all too common and absolutely reprehensible. They seem blind to providing service to their customers unless they can make another dollar on it. Now considering the Invisible dog fence Brand systems are the most expensive on the market you would expect for this added price that they would bend over backwards to help their clients. Unfortunately that is not very often the case and quite often it seems just the opposite. The more it cost the less "Value added" service you receive. If it didn't give the industry such a black eye I would care less.
Well back to the subject at hand. The unit was beeping after being unplugged. Well in order to beep it needs power. If its unplugged there must be an additional power source for example a battery backup. I ask her to describe what wires she saw connected to the unit that was beeping. She explained there were two twisted together, those being the loop wires, there was a black wire that was attached to the transformer she had already unplugged, there was a green ground wire, and there was also a black and red wire together that went to another larger square box on the wall beside the transmitter.
This was the battery backup that she needed to disconnect. Most invisible dog fence dealers love to sell battery backups as it makes additional income for them although it is not very practical in most applications. I instructed her that she needed to unplug the black and red wire combination by simply grasping them close up to the unit and pulling. The small plastic plug disengaged and the beeping stopped.
She thanked me profusely and offered to pay me for my assistance when I refused her gesture she offered to send me the unit as payment for my help. I told her how she could at least recover some of her money from the system by selling it on eBay as there are always buyers on there wanting them. My personal experience with eBay is that there are several invisible dog fence dealers who buy product on there to resell to their customers that are looking for used products. At least these invisible dog fence dealers are trying to provide added services to their clients.
Repairing an Invisible Dog Fence Or Other Underground Dog Fence
I have found there are many reasons a invisible underground dog fence collar will activate in an area that it should not. The most common is a stray signal off of a cable TV line. This happens when the underground fence boundary wire piggy backs or runs on top of the cable TV line for a long distance.
There are different ways to fix this. The first thing I would look at is how large the fence signal field is, if it is larger than six feet (in other words the dog fence receiver activates six feet from the underground wire)and your pet does not test the fence there is probably room to turn the signal field down a little and that will fix the stray signal in most cases.
In a more severe case adjusting the field wont work. I would try removing the ground from the dog fence. If this solves the problem then the problem is in the common ground between the dog fence and the cable TV. To resolve this you simply need a new ground location for the dog fence. The easy thing to do is install a small ground rod outside the garage and attach the dog fence ground to the rod. You need to have a ground for the underground invisible dog fence if not your warranty will be void.
If removing the ground from the dog fence transmitter did not solve the problem try and remove the cable TV ground normally located outside near the electric meter. If this solves the problem what needs to be done is the cable TV needs to be re grounded where it comes into the house at the ground block. The ground block is attached to the house where the outdoor underground cable TV line meets the inside feed to the house and attached is a ground wire that runs to the electric meter or shares the same ground rod as the the electric meter. You must have a cable TV ground it is what protects your home from lightning damage or fire. I recommend to have the cable company do this or a licenced electrician.
If this does not solve your stray signal problem it is possible that it could be something setting off a signal similar to your underground invisible dog fence. It could be a cordless phone or another type of wireless device, take a walk around the house with the dog fence collar and hold it up to anything you may think could cause the problem and move it to another location. The invisible brand fence company has a wireless transmitter called the invisible mask. This will solve your dog fence stray signal problem as well. Most underground pet fencing has a 7K signal or a 10K signal the mask has a switch setting for both. If you have Pet Safe, Innotek, or Radio Fence it is most likely to be 10K any other brand probably 7K. The mask is designed to work with the invisible brand but I have seen it work with most other brands. The only one I have found it not to work with is Dog Watch brand dog fencing.
