How the Dog Fences Works?

The fence has an electric wire fitted with a transmitter and installed underground all around the borders of your acreage or Red Deer AB property. This fence system works by giving out a beeping signal which is received by your dog’s radio collar, each time it (the dog) gets too close to the fence. If your dog continues to ignore the signals, a mild static shock is delivered via its collar to stop it from crossing the fence. However, the shock frequency can be adjusted to limit fear or harm to your dog.

Dog Fencing Systems

Like many pet lovers out there, you want to keep your dog safe. After all it's like keeping your best friend safe! So when it comes to safety, it is worth investing in something that will keep your dog from running away. It's definitely worth considering an underground electric dog fence.

You've likely heard of this concept before. It's not very complicated. A transmitter goes in the house, and a wire is buried around your yard. The wire then emits a radio frequency. It is that radio frequency that triggers a correction when your furry friend gets too close to the dangers of leaving your yard. A fence such as this is ideal if you require a certain amount of flexibility when it in your boundary setting. Unlike a wireless dog fence which can only create a circular radius for your pet, an underground electric dog fence can be placed virtually anywhere you'd like your dog to go. Dog fences can even be run through streams and into lakes!

Deciding where you'd like the dogs boundaries to be is the first job. Once you've had that your professional installer will figure out the best location for the wire. The wire for your underground dog fence will always be placed a few feet away from where you would like the boundaries, to allow for the radio frequency. Getting these boundaries right are important so that since you would have to dig the wire up to change it later!

Once you've determined the boundaries, and allowed space for the radio frequency, it's time to look at obstacles. It's important to plan well for difficult to cross areas. Although an asphalt driveway can be crossed at any location, frequently concrete driveways are crossed at existing expansion joints. Those expansion joints are a great place to hide the wire without having to worry about cutting another line in the concrete. The wire does need to make a complete loop so that's way it's important to establish a clear path around your entire property.

The purpose for burying the wire is two fold. One, you don't want the wire to move around on your dog. And two, you want to protect the wire from being cut or damaged during yard work and trimming. This means that if you have a heavily wooded area, your underground electric dog fence can actually be "buried" above ground! The most common way to do this is to use common landscape fabric staples. Most home improvement stores carry them.

Back at the house, both ends of the wire end up at your transmitter. Your transmitter should be located someplace where it can stay dry and close to an outlet so that you can power it. The transmitter, can be up high or down low on the wall, but it should be someplace that you can see it easily. Most transmitters have lights on them to let you know that they're still operational and it's important to be able to see these lights.

Oh, one more thing about laying out the boundaries, besides keeping your dog in the yard, you can keep him or her out of the flower beds! It's a great feature of the wired underground dog fences that you can splice into the loop creating multiple smaller loops to protect not just your dog, but also your flowers from your dog. A nice benefit of the wired systems for sure.

As for the operation of the dog fence, the radio signal that is created by the wire is programmed to a receiver on your dog's collar. This means that other electronics won't set off your dogs collar on the better brands of these products. When your dog approaches the underground fence he or she can receive a warning, a correction or both a warning and a correction. Again this varies a bit depending on the brand.

When getting too close to its 'out of bounds' area, your dog will hear a high pitched tone or beep as a reminder or warning. If you have that cheeky, adventurous type of dog however, they may continue anyway. When your dog tries to cross that wire boundary, a small electric shock will be sent to the receiver collar. This combined with proper training is what makes the fence so effective. Once your dog associates going too far with receiving that electric shock, it will ultimately keep them within the confines and safety of your yard.

The electric shock varies based on dog temperament. But in general it is no more than a small static shock. Although it is completely harmless to your dog, it's best to have an experienced dog fence professional help you set the correction level for your dog. The correction only needs to be enough to be more than your dogs distraction!

Through the association of the electrical correction, your dog will learn to not run away. Using the underground electric dog fence combined with a few weeks of initial training will soon ensure that your dog stays safe in your yard. And won't it be nice to have one less thing to worry about!

Wireless Dog Fences

Small Dog Fence

Do you want to keep your dog in your yard without a fence? Does your dog have a problem with digging under your current fence? Do you take your dog with you on hunting or camping trips? Are you interested in an underground dog fence but don't want the hassle of burying the wire? Do you have certain areas in your home which you would like to be off limits to your dog?  If your answer to any of these questions is "yes," you may want to consider the advantages of a wireless dog fence.

Wireless dog fence is a new and popular product in today's electronic world. Purchasing a wireless dog fence is a good option for budget conscious dog owners who need an effective solution to a nearly universal dog owner problem. It will give your dog plenty of freedom to run and play, while at the same time keeping him safe, secure, and well behaved. A wireless dog fence is safe, affordable, and easy to install. It is much cheaper than building a fence, and does not obstruct your view or give your yard an unsightly appearance like a traditional fence can. Wireless dog fences are also available for use inside the home as well as outside, giving you the ability to allow your dog some freedom inside your home while still controlling his boundaries. Unlike other fences, wireless dog fences are portable. This makes them wonderful for use while traveling, and are especially useful and popular for hunting and camping trips. Lastly, if you already have a fence and your dog is an escape artist, a wireless dog fence can help solve this frustrating problem. With training, your dog will learn that the fence boundary itself is to be respected because the wireless dog fence can be set up within it.

When choosing a wireless dog fence for your dog, keep in mind a few important details. We always recommend that you purchase your system from a reputable manufacturer with a good warranty, for peace of mind right from the start. Examples include Petsafe, Innotek, and Perimeter. Make sure that the system you choose is suitable for the weight of your particular dog. Also, you may want to consider purchasing an additional transmitter which can be used to enlarge the area. A wireless dog fence may not be the right choice for you if your yard is sloped. And you should definitely choose a model that has adjustable correction levels, so that you can personalize the training program for your particular dog.

Once you have purchased and have your wireless dog fence in hand, it should only take a few minutes to install using the instruction manual which will be included. You will place the transmitter either within your home, or possibly in your garage. The transmitter does need to be kept out of the rain. You can then place the wireless dog fence collar on your dog and begin training him; do not neglect this essential part of the process.

Training your dog to respect the boundaries of your new wireless dog fence usually takes a few weeks, but the time period greatly depends on each individual dog. Persistence and consistency in training will pay off. You should always supervise your dog for the initial period after the installation of your wireless dog fence. You can also place flags to mark the boundaries and use them to show your dog where he is allowed to be. Keep him on a leash at first, and set the correction level on his collar to the minimal level. Then follow him on the leash, allowing him to explore until he reaches the boundary and receives a mild shock. This shock is very humane and is not designed to harm your dog, but just to get his attention. It is similar to the shock you receive from the carpet when you rub your feet on it. Once your dog receives the correction, pull him back from the boundary and praise him. You can also give treats at first to reinforce your training. Your dog may learn to respect the boundary within one or two times, or it may take a bit longer for him to understand. He will eventually learn, however, and then you will be able to remove the leash. Continue supervising him without the leash for awhile, until you feel very confident in observing him respecting the boundaries of the fence at all times. The method for training a dog to an indoor wireless dog fence is very similar.

A wireless dog fence is an exciting new product in today's modern society, and is worth considering by dog owners as an affordable and effective option. While there is possibly no perfect solution to keeping our dogs safe and contained, today's inventions such as the wireless dog fence keep coming closer with each generation.
